Polish mayor slams Roy Keane over Republic singing comments

A Polish mayor has emerged as an unlikely hero to slam Roy Keane for telling Irish football fans to stop singing and chanting during the Euro 2012 tournament.

Ryszard Grobelny, mayor of Poznan has defended the Irish chorus after Keane told them to quit singing You’ll Never Beat the Irish, following the Green Army’s 4-0 thrashing by Spain last Thursday. But Mr Grobelny said the tournament would not be the same without the Irish contingent and said: "There is no way they should stop singing - they wouldn’t be Irish if they did.

“I must say the Irish fans are magnificent and the residents really appreciate the atmosphere they have created. They are the best group I have ever seen.”
