Lyons close on French title

Monday, May 12, 2008

Lyons stayed two points clear at the top of Ligue 1 with one game left after a 1-0 home win over Nancy on Saturday.

Nancy's Brazilian defender Andre Luiz deflected the ball into his own net on the hour to put Lyons on 76 points ahead of second-placed Bordeaux, who beat Sochaux 2-0. Lyons visit lowly Auxerre next Saturday while Bordeaux travel to struggling Lens.

At the other end of the table, Strasbourg follow bottom side Metz down to the second division after a 4-1 home defeat by Caen while Paris St-Germain moved out of the relegation zone with a 1-1 draw with St Etienne at Parc des Princes.

In the Netherlands, Pavel Pogrebnyak converted a late penalty Saturday to give Zenit St Petersburg a 2-2 draw with AZ Alkmaar in a friendly warm-up for the Uefa Cup final against Rangers. Pogrebnyak, who is suspended for the final, came off the bench to score an 81st-minute goal, underlining how much Zenit will miss him on Wednesday.

In the Dutch league, Twente came from behind to beat Ajax 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League qualification play-off. Luis Suarez put Ajax ahead just before half-time but a second-half double from Blaise N'Kufo, the first a penalty, turned the tide.

Galatasaray won the Turkish league title for the 17th time on Saturday with a 2-0 win against Genclerbirligi Oftas, wresting the championship back from their Istanbul rivals Fenerbahce.

Galatasaray took the lead in the 36th minute when Arda Turan sped down the right wing and crossed for the veteran striker Hakan Sukur to score with a simple tap-in. Defender Hakan Balta made it 2-0 just before half-time with a powerful volley from outside the penalty area.
