Expect tough night, Timmy Adamson warns Fulham
Thursday, 14 July 2011
Timmy Adamson has warned Fulham that big name reputations will not be respected at Seaview tonight.
Crusaders are gearing up for one of the biggest matches in their history as the Premier League club arrive for the first leg of a Europa League second qualifying round clash.
It's the most glamourous battle at the Shore Road venue since Liverpool stopped by on the way to lifting the European Cup in the 1976-77 season.
With new stands erected at Seaview and a bumper crowd expected, it's a special moment in the club's history, a real David v Goliath showdown and a timely reminder of the romance of the game in testing economic times.
It's easy to feel sympathy for players such as injured duo Chris Morrow and Declan Caddell, as well as the suspended Colin Coates, who must sit out both matches.
But for those who do pull on the new home Crues jersey against Martin Jol's household names, it's sure to be an unforgettable two nights.
And just to add another kick to the mouthwatering cocktail, former Linfield and Dungannon Swifts striker Adamson will be making his competitive debut for the Hatchetmen.
The 28-year-old agreed a two-year deal at the Crues - much to the satisfaction of boss Stephen Baxter, a long-time admirer.
"It's an unbelievable draw for us," admitted Adamson. "The prospect of me making my competitive debut against a Premier League side is very exciting.
"It's not something that comes around often. It's important for us to go out and enjoy it for that reason. But we will give them a good test in both matches hopefully. They have big names and good players but we can play a bit too.
"You never know what can happen and my mindset won't change just because it's Fulham.
"I don't go onto a pitch to get beaten and while no-one expects us to win either match I always look to cause teams problems.
"We have everything to gain in terms of pride and giving a good account of ourselves.
"Glentoran have already won in Europe and given the Irish League another boost. All you can do is give it 100 per cent."
When Adamson put pen to paper at Seaview he never expected one of his first duties to be ruffling the feathers of Northern Ireland skipper Aaron Hughes.
Hughes and Brede Hangeland will be keeping a close eye on the Crues attack with Adamson supported by Jordan Owens.
"We're coming up against international players but we can't think about that too much," said Adamson. "We have good players as well such as Stuart Dallas and Jordan Owens who have the attributes to play across the water.
Crues boss Stephen Baxter returns from holiday today - just in time to mastermind a win over Fulham.
A nice easy start to the season for him!
