Glens hold no fear for Ukrainians

Vorskla Poltava are bound for the Europa League group stages and Glentoran aren’t going to stand in their way — so says club President Oleg Babaev.

Speaking in the wake of his side’s 1-0 loss to newly promoted Aleksandriya in their opening league match at the weekend, Babaev insisted the Ukrainians would bounce back at the Oval.

“I am confident that we will beat Glentoran,” he said.

“Vorskla has always struggled against weaker teams in Europe, but against strong opponents the team raises their game.

“This season we will break that tradition and play at our best against every opponent, no matter who they are. We will learn from our League defeat and we will beat Glentoran. Our ambition in the Europa League is to qualify for the group stage.”

Coach Mykola Popov, meanwhile, was a little more circumspect in his approach following the Glens’ heroic defeat of FK Renova in the last round.

“We have the dvd from Glentoran's first match in Macedonia. We will be studying it carefully and we will also be getting a copy of the second match at the Oval.

“We spent last week preparing for our first league game and now we will be devoting our attention to Thursday's opponents.”
