Manchester United in Europe: Five Old Trafford glory nights

Some of Manchester United's most memorable European nights

April 24, 1968: Manchester United 1 Real Madrid 0

This was the first leg of a tantalizing semi-final encounter. United managed to brush pass Real with a 1-0 victory thanks to Brian Kidd scoring the only goal of the game. That was vital in helping United scrape through to the final as they held Madrid 3-3 in the return fixture in the Spanish capital. United went on to win the European Cup defeating Benfica in the final 4-1.

March 21, 1984: Manchester United 3 Barcelona 0

United needed something of a miracle to overcome a 2-0 deficit from the first leg in Barcelona and Bryan Robson (pictured) provide it. Captain Marvel grabbed two goals to help United hammer Barcelona 3-0 and win the tie 3-2 on aggregate. The other goalscorer was Frank Stapleton, set up by Norman Whiteside. A young Diego Maradona played for Barca on a night in which the Stretford End created a stunning atmosphere.

April 23 2003: Manchester United 4 Real Madrid 3

This goes down as one of the best games ever seen at the Theatre of Dreams. Real broke the deadlock in the early stages of the game thanks to Ronaldo (the Brazilian one). In a brilliant display he went on to net a classy hat-trick. United fell behind at three different stages in the game but refused to give up and came out with a 4-3 victory on the night, though they lost on aggregate. The goalscorers were Ruud Van Nistlerooy, Helguero (OG), and David Beckham (2), one of which was a trademark free-kick. Becks had come on as substitute after falling out with Sir Alex Ferguson.

April 10, 2007: Manchester United 7 AS Roma 1

United were 2-1 down from the first leg in Rome so a 1-0 victory was all that the Red Devils needed to take them to the semi-finals. Instead they ended up smashing home SEVEN against the Italian side. Michael Carrick opened the floodgates with a fantastic strike after ten minutes. Carrick managed to get on the act again later on in the game scoring another peach of a strike. Other goalscoreres included Alan Smith, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo (2) and Patrice Evra.

April 29 2008: Manchester United 1 Barcelona 0

Paul Scholes powered Manchester United through to the final against Chelsea with a thunderous strike early on in the game. The Red Devils and the Catalan giants were locked at 0-0 in the first leg so the 1-0 scoreline was perfect for United who survived a late rally from Barca. United went on to win the trophy in a dramatic final, beating Chelsea on penalties in the rain in Moscow.

I was at the Roma game in 2007...on the 0730 ex Larne to Cairnryan on the morning of match with my cousin who was going to see United for the first time.

Arrived at the ground around 5pm, where the atmosphere was electric - remember there had been some trouble in Rome for the first leg - so the tension was palpable.

Got in the ground, where I'd never heard noise like that before. An incredible night.

Then after the game, left Old Trafford for the drive up to Cairnryan again, which flew in, made the 415am sailing and back home for before 7am that morning!

An immense trip despite the mad amount of travelling and worth every second!

Gary Neville could be key to Wayne Rooney's form at Euros

You might have thought that ruling yourself out of the first two games of football's second most important international tournament with a shocking flash of irresponsibility was quite enough to focus the mind of the nation's most gifted player.

Billy on the Box: DD’s big pair puts on blue show in Bavaria

What an epic battle the Champions League Final turned out to be. A clash between an organisation with a long and distinguished history, respected by friend and foe alike up against a relative newcomer, the plaything of a foreign oligarch, who is universally viewed with raised eyebrows.
