Milan's Mourinho in Madrid with Real job up for grabs

Jose Mourinho will arrive in Madrid today with Champions League glory his mission.

And Saturday night’s final against Bayern Munich appears increasingly likely to be the last time that he will manage Inter Milan, with Real Madrid ready to sack Manuel Pellegrini and replace him with Mourinho.

Ironically if the Portuguese coach leaves the Spanish capital as the third man to lead two different clubs to European Cup victory it will be as manager of the city’s top club that he will have the chance of becoming the first to do it three times.

Reports in Madrid suggest that Real president Florentino Perez has made his mind up to get rid of the Chilean coach after Real finished second behind Barcelona in La Liga and also flopped in the Champions League and the Spanish Cup.

He will pocket £3.4 million as a pay-off, but Mourinho will earn £12 million a year on a four-year deal at the Bernabeu after rejecting Inter president Massimo Moratti’s offer of a pay rise to take the world’s highest paid manager to the same salary.

Perez smashed all the transfer records last summer by splashing out around £230 million on eight players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema.

And he is now reportedly ready to spend another £200 million to end Barca’s domination of the domestic scene and bring European glory to Real next season, with it being claimed that Mourinho has asked Perez to sign three players from Portuguese champions Benfica — Angel Di Maria, David Luiz and Fabio Coentrao.

Mourinho admits he could end up walking away from the Nerazzurri, even if he engineers a famous win over Bayern, and that will lead to him becoming Real’s 23rd coach in the last two decades.

“It's not a problem of contract or money and that makes me slightly embarrassed because of what I earn considering the (world economic) crisis there is,” said Mourinho.

“It's a problem of personal satisfaction, to feel respected or not in a football nation where I have had so many problems.”

He also said previously: “Inter doesn't owe me anything and I owe nothing to Inter, because I've given everything,” he said.

“At this time, I am the Inter coach. I have a contract until 2012 or 2013, I don't remember.”

Gary Neville could be key to Wayne Rooney's form at Euros

You might have thought that ruling yourself out of the first two games of football's second most important international tournament with a shocking flash of irresponsibility was quite enough to focus the mind of the nation's most gifted player.

What an epic battle the Champions League Final turned out to be. A clash between an organisation with a long and distinguished history, respected by friend and foe alike up against a relative newcomer, the plaything of a foreign oligarch, who is universally viewed with raised eyebrows.
