Rooney and Messi listed for top prize

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is the only Englishman on the 23-man shortlist for the prestigious Ballon D'Or, released yesterday by FIFA.

Rooney helped United to a record 19th league title, their third Champions League final in four seasons and contributed to a rapid start to this campaign before the shuddering defeat to Man City.

The only other United player listed for the award is Nani.

Barcelona have eight nominees, including Argentina’s Lionel Messi.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been nominated in the coach of the year category, along with Chelsea’s Andre Villas-Boas and Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger.
