Police last night released 28-year-old photographs of a police officer posing with the European Cup after a man walked into the station and handed it in, telling them he had stolen it from footballers in a pub.

Staff at West Bar police station in Sheffield could not believe their eyes when the man arrived with the trophy and handed himself in one night in 1982 after stealing the cup from celebrating Aston Villa footballers in the West Midlands. But not wanting to miss an opportunity, officers captured the moment on camera.

Aston Villa beat German team Bayern Munich in the European Cup final in Rotterdam on May 26, 1982.

Back in the UK, players took the cup to a pub to celebrate but their boisterous behaviour annoyed another customer who stole the cup.
