Defiant: Louis van Gaal sets out his stall in Wolfsburg

Unruffled Louis van Gaal sends his misfiring Manchester United team into tonight's win or bust Champions League survival clash with Wolfsburg in Germany insisting it is they - and not him - who must prove themselves.

United are likely to crash out of the Champions League group stages for just the fourth time in history if their patched-up team fails to win in Wolfsburg.

Otherwise United will have to rely on PSV Eindhoven slipping up at home to CSKA Moscow - who are already out - to make it through to the last 16.

United's style of play and lack of goals under the Dutchman has sent his approval rating plummeting among the Old Trafford faithful who again booed Saturday's home 0-0 draw with West Ham.

Asked how he could convince fans that goals would come, Van Gaal admitted: "I have the experience as a manager that the goals shall come. When you are creating chances you shall finish those kind of chances. That's why we have that belief. It's a matter of time and I hope we can prove it.

"We have that belief. It's a matter of time and I hope we can prove it tonight."
