Everton midfielder Darron Gibson has withdrawn from the Ireland squad to face the Czech Republic next week, the Barclays Premier League club have announced.

The former Manchester United player had been included in Giovanni Trapattoni's 26-man squad for the friendly at the Aviva Stadium on February 29.

However, the Blues have announced he has sustained a knee injury, the seriousness of which is unknown.

The 24-year-old had been set to accompany club team-mates Seamus Coleman and Shane Duffy to Dublin before sustaining the injury which is still being assessed.

Gibson's injury is a worry for Everton boss David Moyes although the club do not have a game until March 3 when they travel to QPR given their scheduled clash against Liverpool this weekend will be played at a later date due to the Reds' participation in the Carling Cup final against Cardiff.

Gibson has played seven games for Everton since joining the club from Manchester United and he is yet to taste defeat with the Toffees.

Gary Neville could be key to Wayne Rooney's form at Euros

You might have thought that ruling yourself out of the first two games of football's second most important international tournament with a shocking flash of irresponsibility was quite enough to focus the mind of the nation's most gifted player.

Billy on the Box: DD’s big pair puts on blue show in Bavaria

What an epic battle the Champions League Final turned out to be. A clash between an organisation with a long and distinguished history, respected by friend and foe alike up against a relative newcomer, the plaything of a foreign oligarch, who is universally viewed with raised eyebrows.
