So, did the NI heroes deliver for their clubs?
Sanchez's stars experience mixed fortunes at weekend
Monday, 2 April 2007
Following the heroics of last Wednesday, it was back to domestic action for our boys over the weekend.
Here we take a look at how they fared.
Maik Taylor (Birmingham City)
May have won his 60th cap in midweek, but Northern Ireland's second most capped goalkeeper had to once again be content with a place on the bench as Birmingham increased their chances of automatic promotion back to the Premiership with a 3-0 victory Coventry City.
Michael Duff (Burnley)
One of the unsung heroes against Sweden, the central defender was an unused substitute in Burnley's scoreless draw at home to Luton Town on Saturday. Clarets boss Steve Cotterill decided to rest the 29-year-old following his international exertions for Northern Ireland.
Jonny Evans (Sunderland)
The 19-year-old just seems to get better and better. Jonny followed up his impressive display against Sweden with a man-of-the match performance in Sunderland's 1-0 success at Cardiff. He did, however, pick up a booking in the closing moments of Saturday's game.
Grant McCann (Barnsley)
Grant started in the centre of midfield for the crucial game with Derby. He was substituted after 56 minutes after the Tykes suffered a 2-1 home defeat to leave them perilously close to the relegation zone.
Stephen Craigan (Motherwell)
Craigan, who must be one of the first names on Sanchez's team-sheet these days, was again a rock in the heart of the Motherwell defence which defeated bottom of the table Dunfermline Athletic at Fir Park. His only black mark came when he picked up his fourth booking of the campaign.
Aaron Hughes (Aston Villa)
The Northern Ireland skipper will be hoping that yet another fine performance for his country will persuade his boss Martin O'Neill to start him in a Premiership game for the first time since January 13 when Aston Villa entertain Everton tonight.
Steve Davis (Aston Villa)
It has been a difficult second full Premiership season for the 22-year-old, however, his displays for his country over the past week have shown he is at last beginning to regain some of his old form, though whether that is enough to make it back into the Villa team for the game with Everton remains to be seen.
Damien Johnson (Birmingham City)
The creator of David Healy's second goal against Sweden played the entire 90 minutes of Birmingham City's comfortable 3-0 victory over Coventry City at St. Andrews yesterday.
David Healy (Leeds United)
After all the good natured banter Dennis Wise received at Windsor Park last week, he finally relented and played 'King David' from the start in Leeds United's clash with Healy's former club Preston on Friday night. It was therefore inevitable that Euro 2008's top marksman would repay his boss with a last minute goal to give Leeds a crucial three points in their battle to avoid the drop to League One.
Warren Feeney (Cardiff City)
The industrious striker who must have covered every blade of grass at Windsor against the Swedes, made his debut for Cardiff City as a 74th minute substitute in their 1-0 home defeat to Roy Keane's Sunderland on Saturday.
Chris Brunt (Sheffield Wednesday)
After establishing himself on the left side of midfield for the international team over the past week, Brunt played all but three minutes of Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace. He picked up a 61st minute booking which will now suspend him for the Owls next fixture which is away to Cardiff.
Subs:
Sean Webb (Ross County)
Webb, who replaced two-goal hero David Healy on Wednesday, was an unused substitute for the Scottish First Division outfit as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Hamilton in front of just 1,039 fans at the weekend.
Kyle Lafferty (Burnley)
After being dropped in favour of Warren Feeney on Wednesday the Fermanagh man had once again to sit on the substitute's bench as Burnley could only manage a disappointing scoreless draw with Luton. Entered the fray with 22 minutes left on the clock, but failed to make an impact.
Ivan Sproule (Hibernian)
Ivan played the final 30 minutes of Hibernian's 1-0 defeat in the Edinburgh derby with Hearts at Easter Road yesterday.
The former Omagh Town winger is currently the third highest Northern Ireland scorer in England and Scotland this season with nine.
