Evans is craving that Windsor winning feeling
Wednesday, 26 March 2008
Jonny Evans is determined to experience that well known Windsor Park winning feeling again tonight.
Last month the Manchester United defender - who is currently on-loan with Sunderland - was credited with the own-goal which gave Bulgaria victory in Belfast.
Martin Petrov's shot may well have been going into the net anyway, but the attempt by Evans to cut it out took it over the line.
That was the first time in his international career that Evans had tasted defeat at home and it is a feeling that the 20-year-old isn't keen on repeating.
Georgia come to Windsor Park tonight for the final international game of the season and Evans wants to finish on a winning note.
"I don't think there was too much in the Bulgaria game," said Evans.
"What hurt was that we lost our home record.
"We'd done well at Windsor over the last couple of years and we wanted to keep winning there.
"That's what we will be looking for again against Georgia and it will be another important workout for the manager."
Evans played at centre-half for the first time in a Northern Ireland shirt in the game against Bulgaria, having played all his previous international football at full-back.
Stephen Craigan is back tonight though and he is likely to resume his partnership with Aaron Hughes. Evans, however, is happy wherever he plays.
"Centre-half is my position, but there is a lot of competition for places and wherever Nigel Worthington feels I can do a job I have to accept," said Evans.
The withdrawals of Roy Carroll, Sammy Clingan, Chris Brunt and Martin Paterson have left Worthington with a squad of 18 to select his team from, but the three Linfield players, Alan Mannus, Michael Gault and Peter Thompson will all have to settle for places on the bench with the manager confirming that their appearances in the Blues 4-1 win at Coleraine yesterday - in which Thompson scored twice - ruling them out of contention for a starting slot.
