Healy can make it a night to remember

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

In the great scheme of things, tonight's international friendly between Northern Ireland and Georgia isn't exactly the most important match to be played at Windsor Park over the last few years.

But for David Healy it promises to be a special night - a night when he is saluted for his outstanding achievements by a legend of the game.

UEFA President Michel Platini, an iconic footballer for Juventus and France, will make a presentation to Healy before the game with Georgia to mark his record breaking exploits in the European Championship qualifiers.

The Fulham forward scored 13 goals in the campaign and deserves more than anyone to be going to Euro 2008, but like all the Northern Ireland players will have to watch it on television after they went so close to securing a summer trip to Austria and Switzerland.

So, while tonight's fixture may be regarded as a low key affair, certainly in comparison to those epic Belfast evenings against Spain, Sweden and Denmark, Platini's appearance is something Northern Ireland fans and Healy can feel rightly proud about.

It would be just like the 28-year-old from Killyleagh to follow his meeting with Platini with another international goal, adding to the 33 he has scored in 63 appearances to date.

Earlier this week in the Belfast Telegraph, Healy said how honoured he feels about Platini visiting Belfast, adding that it would be fitting if the home team could turn on the style in front of a man who oozed it.

Incidentally when winning his 64th cap tonight, Healy will join Martin O'Neill in tenth place in Northern Ireland's all time list.

Goalkeeper Maik Taylor will make his 68th appearance almost nine years to the day since he made his international debut while yesterday a decade ago captain Aaron Hughes, who will win his 59th cap tonight, first played for his country.

In Northern Ireland's last 16 friendlies at Windsor since April 1999, they have just won one.

Tonight they might make it two against a Georgian side, whose top player is AC Milan's Kakha Kaladze, to end a memorable international season on a high note.

Kick-off is 7.45pm with Platini's presentation to Healy scheduled for 15 minutes earlier.
