Nigel praises boys after a Worthy win
Thursday, 27 March 2008
Nigel Worthington heaped praise on his side after a 4-1 demolition job on Georgia and declared: "That's the real Northern Ireland."
The Northern Ireland boss called for his side to play his style of football that he wanted and they came up trumps in front of the watching UEFA President Michel Platini.
Platini was in Belfast to present David Healy with an award to mark his record-breaking 13 goals in the Euro 2008 qualifiers and he added his 34th international strike for good measure, either side of Kyle Lafferty's first-half double.
Healy's own goal was a slight blip but Peter Thompson completed the scoring with his first strike in a Northern Ireland shirt.
"That was very good and I'm very pleased," beamed Worthington.
"We put them under pressure, created chances and they showed me they could score goals.
"Everyone talks about the goals David Healy scores and rightly so, but we have showed there is more to our game than just that.
"David got a goal on his big night which was pleasing for everyone but I was delighted for Kyle Lafferty to get a couple of goals and he knows he has to keep doing that.
"Peter Thompson is a player I have been very impressed with too, and his goal made be particularly pleased.
"But that was the team effort I have asked for.
"I wanted a high tempo and in the first half-half that's exactly what I got.
"It was the real Northern Ireland."
Worthington also had to alter his team selection on the morning of the game when George McCartney left the team hotel to be with his wife who is expecting their child.
That gave Jonny Evans his chance to impress at left-back and Worthington was pleased to see more competition in his squad.
He added: "George had to go this morning and Jonny would have been on the bench but he took his opportunity and showed me if he needs to be called upon he is up to it.
"But it wasn't just Jonny. They all worked hard to put down the bench mark for what I want when the World Cup campaign starts in September."
Klaus Toppmoller admitted he was happy to avoid "a disaster" after Northern Ireland ripped Georgia apart in the first-half.
"We were 3-0 down so quickly and the game was over by half-time," he said.
"I can't take anything from the game over than we avoided a disaster with our performance after half-time.
"We were missing 10 players but I did want more but this was the first time anything like this has happened but at least we did improve.
"But we knew Northern Ireland would be strong at home as they have proved by beating Spain, Sweden and Denmark recently."
Northern Ireland skipper Aaron Hughes could see the funny side of record scorer Healy's own goal.
"It was another good finish from David," he laughed.
"He made a tackle, won the ball and it's just gone past everyone.
"It's unfortunate, it happens, I know because I've been there myself.
"It was a good night for David though. It is great that he got another goal to add to his tally for Northern Ireland and the fact that Michel Platini came over to give him the award."
