Brunt eyes success in next Euro campaign

Chris Brunt believes Northern Ireland have shown that they have the quality to make it to the 2012 European Championships.

The West Bromich Albion winger has been encouraged by the performance produced in Saturday night's Windsor Park friendly against Serbia and, while the focus wasn’t on the result — with nothing riding on the outcome, in terms of points — it was a game he believes Nigel Worthington's men should have won.

Brunt had a great chance himself to open the scoring early in the first-half, before Danko Lazovic struck with the only goal of the game shortly after.

“I just tried to get a good strike on it and I thought I hit it reasonably well,” said Brunt. At this level they are the kind of chances we need to be putting away.

“The way the ball was coming to me I had to come back onto it a bit rather than running onto it I would have liked to have got a better run at it.”

Now he wants Northern Ireland's attacking weapons to sharpen up and start banging in the goals before the Euro qualifying series kicks-off in 10 months time.

It was Celtic's Niall McGinn on the opposite flank to Brunt who provided Northern Ireland's biggest threat and gave whoever chooses the man-of-the-match their easiest decision in a while.

And with quality on the wings it bodes well for the future, with both McGinn and Brunt looking like they can provide goals from those positions — something that Northern Ireland have always lacked.

“Niall had our best chances in the first-half and created most of them himself,” said Brunt

“We've got to take whatever positives there are because sometimes in friendlies you don't get much out of from that point of view.

“I think there were individual performances and all round as a team we created chances, defended well and restricted a good team to maybe only one or two decent chances.

“We're disappointed to concede the goal, but that's football, you take it on the chin and learn from it.”
