England named top seeds for Euro qualifiers

Friday, 20 November 2009

England have been named among the top seeds for February's European Championship qualifying draw — but Scotland are in the third band after falling down the rankings.

England won nine of their 10 qualifiers for next summer's World Cup and Fabio Capello's men will again be the highest-ranked team in their group.

But the Scots' dismal showing in the race to South Africa sees them now rated the 26th best side in Europe.

Meanwhile, FIFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against the Egyptian Football Association after the Algerian team bus was pelted with stones in the lead-up to the World Cup qualifier between the two teams last Saturday.

The world governing body confirmed they had received reports of “incidents affecting the Algerian team on its way from the airport to the hotel” two days before the game.

Egypt won the game 2-0 in Cairo to force a play-off to decide which of the two sides would make it to next summer's World Cup. Algeria won the play-off 1-0 at the Khartoum Stadium in Sudan last night.

If Chelsea can be the kings of Europe, so can England

One of the consequences of the late finish in Munich and the chaotic transport arrangements after the Champions League final was to force the ‘great and the good’ of the English football media to gather on a station platform near the Arena for a promised train to the city centre that, ultimately, never arrived.

Billy on the Box: DD’s big pair puts on blue show in Bavaria

What an epic battle the Champions League Final turned out to be. A clash between an organisation with a long and distinguished history, respected by friend and foe alike up against a relative newcomer, the plaything of a foreign oligarch, who is universally viewed with raised eyebrows.
