Healy at peace with Worthington
Friday, 6 February 2009
David Healy has declared there will be no problems between himself and manager Nigel Worthington when the Northern Ireland squad meet up ahead of next Wednesday’s crucial World Cup qualifier in San Marino.
The pair had a very public disagreement back in December, relating to Healy’s future with Sunderland when Worthington suggested that he should move in order to play more first team football otherwise his international place would be in doubt.
The comments were not welcomed by the striker who described them as “disappointing” adding that he had no intention of leaving Sunderland.
Healy is still not playing as much as he would like for the Black Cats, but showed this week in an FA Cup tie against Blackburn, when given the chance, he can score which is good news for Northern Ireland approaching a must win clash in San Marino.
Worthington and his players are due to meet up on Sunday and Healy insists all will be fine in the camp.
Writing in his Belfast Telegraph column, Healy said: “It’s well documented that we had differing opinions on my Sunderland future and at the time I was pretty forceful in my views.
“I don’t regret it, but it’s a few months on, we’ve both said our piece and it’s been put to bed.
“We had a brief chat recently and what is important now is getting a result for Northern Ireland.
“I won’t have any problems with Nigel whatsoever. We’re all in this together, the manager, players, the fans.
“We need to be, that’s how we made the impossible possible by beating the likes of England and Spain and that’s what is required for us to have any chance of making it to South Africa next year.”
