Irish FA President Jim Shaw has sounded what appears to be the death knell for the Carling Nations Cup.

There had been plans to continue the much vaunted tournament, won by the Republic of Ireland in Dublin last May, in Cardiff next year, but the inaugural event turned out to be a complete flop and a £2m cash wrangle looks like being the final straw.

Northern Ireland, the Republic and Wales are locked in a collective battle with Scotland over a £2m sum they are claiming from the tournament and the Belfast Telegraph understands that the IFA will be forced to sustain a £500,000 loss unless the Scots agree to a reduced cut of the sponsors cash.

“It was a one-off to start with,” said Shaw. “There was never any agreement to continue. I suppose if it had gone well there is the possibility that it could have been repeated. I don't envisage it happening again.”

Northern Ireland fans staged a boycott of games against their southern rivals and Wales in Dublin after the IFA imposed travel restrictions following sectarian singing during last February’s defeat to Scotland at the Aviva Stadium and the attendance against Wales came to only 529.
