I’m not a negative manager, says Nigel Worthington
Nigel Worthington last night went on the defensive over claims that Northern Ireland’s tactics have been negative during his managerial reign.
The international boss has come under fire from disgruntled fans who have criticised him for lacking sufficient imagination to win matches — particularly in certain home games.
Euro 2012 play-off hopes all but died after last month’s shambolic 4-1 defeat in Estonia and Worthington insists that his team will take a positive approach into tonight’s return game at Windsor Park.
“Sometimes I wonder where it comes from, to be honest,” was Worthington’s response to the suggestions that his approach has been negative.
“We set up to go out and win games and I’ve explained why we can’t go and concede one or two goals, because then we’re playing major catch-up.
“We don’t have the cutting edge to be able to come back from that kind of scenario.
“I always send the players out in a positive frame of mind to look to win the game.”
