Italy open gap at top

Published 26/03/2011

Slovenia 0 Italy 1: Italy will go into the summer in pole position in Group C and as hot favourites to make it to the Euro 2012 finals after a workmanlike win over Slovenia in Ljubljana.

Inter Milan midfielder Thiago Motta's first international goal in the 73rd minute was enough to earn victory over the Slovenians, who visit Windsor Park on Tuesday evening.

He struck after a neat exchange with Federico Balzaretti to decide the contest.

The Azzurri next face Estonia at home in June and a win could go a long way to securing a place in the finals in Ukraine and Poland.
