Jim Magilton will lead the Northern Ireland under-21s into battle with Macedonia at Mourneview Park today (5pm) encouraged by the performances in the opening two games of their European Championship qualifying campaign last month.

The youngsters were level with Scotland in their opening game before going down to 10 men when Dale Gorman was sent off, with the Scots scoring their winner just two minutes later.

They followed that up with a 1-1 draw in Iceland a few days later, but were left with thinking what might have been having led for almost the entire first half after Ryan Johnson's second-minute goal.

After that game Magilton declared that it had been a 'tremendous draw in horrific conditions' before adding: 'Players were superb.'

The fact that those are the only points that Iceland have dropped in their opening four games is a measure of how good a result it actually was.

Macedonia have three points from two games after beating Ukraine last month.

TODAY'S FIXTURES: Northern Ireland v Macedonia (5pm), Scotland v Iceland (5.45pm), France v Ukraine (5.45pm).
