Jonny's cup for it

Nothing could beat qualifying for the World Cup with Northern Ireland for Jonny Evans.

And that includes the possibility of helping Manchester United achieve a five-trophy haul this season.

Evans has two medals already this season, but after an impressive performance in the 3-2 win over Poland on Saturday, which put Nigel Worthington’s men on top of their World Cup qualifying group, making it to the finals in South Africa would top anything he achieves at Old Trafford.

“I think that qualifying for the World Cup would be one of the biggest achievements ever for a player from this country,” said Evans, who was in the team as United won the World Club Championship and Carling Cup earlier in the season.

“It would be bigger than winning at Manchester United — and harder too.”

The 21-year-old — who scored his first international goal in the defeat of the Poles — is expected to play a part in the Old Trafford side’s chase for the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the remainder of the season.

His more immediate concern, however, is picking up three more points on the road to South Africa by beating Slovenia at Windsor Park on Wednesday night.

“It was a great feeling to see the ball hit the net. Really nice to get a goal for Northern Ireland,” said Evans.

“We’ll go into Wednesday looking for three more important points and try to stay at the top of the group.”
