Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis has paid tribute to his close friend and room-mate Chris Baird who is retiring from international football, insisting that the Derby County star will be missed on and off the pitch.

Baird has decided to hang up his Northern Ireland shirt after a fine 13-year career and 79 caps at the highest level.

The 34-year-old's final game for his country was at the Euro 2016 finals against Poland in Nice. Thanking the Northern Ireland fans for their support, Baird said that it was a "tough decision" to quit but felt it was the right time to call it a day and focus on his club Derby.

Davis said: "Chris is a close friend of mine and was my room-mate on international trips so it is sad to see him retire.

"When you played with him you appreciated what he did for the team. He has been a great servant for Northern Ireland over the years and will be missed both on and off the pitch."
