Northern Ireland on the up

Northern Ireland are moving up in the world, according to the latest FIFA statistics.

Nigel Worthington’s boys, fresh from their comfortable 3-0 win over San Marino in a World Cup qualifier, are the big movers in the latest world rankings.

Northern Ireland have jumped seven places and are now joint 42nd with Iran.

The Republic of Ireland move up three spots to 26th following a 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over Georgia.

England have slipped a place, falling to ninth following their 2-0 loss in Spain last month.

The European champions remain in top spot, leading Germany by 300 points.

Elsewhere, Wales drop three positions to 68th after being overtaken by Algeria, Venezuela and Bahrain while Scotland lie just ahead of the Republic in 24th spot.
