Northern Ireland women end Euro campaign with heavy loss to Swiss
Switzerland 4-0 Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland's women ended their Euro 2017 qualifying campaign with a 4-0 defeat away to group winners Switzerland, who clinched their eighth win from eight games.
The Swiss scored twice before the break and then wrapped up the victory with two more in the second half to consign Northern Ireland, who were missing several key players for the game, to fourth place in the group with seven points.
Venessa Bernauer opened the scoring for the hosts with a thundering long-range effort in the 17th minute, with Rahel Kiwic's header moments before the half-time interval doubling their lead.
Bernauer then put the result beyond doubt just after the restart with a delightful chip over Jessica Poots in goal, and Rachel Rinaset added some gloss to the scoreline as she drilled home the fourth.
Northern Ireland did threaten through captain Marissa Callaghan, however, they could not beat Gaelle Thalmann in the Swiss goal, who ensured the hosts would progress to the finals in style.
