Speed quick to end Bale row
Wales manager Gary Speed yesterday faced the media to nip in the bud any suggestion of a club-versus-country row with Tottenham over Gareth Bale's fitness.
The Spurs winger yesterday withdrew from the Wales squad for tomorrow's Euro 2012 qualifier against England in Cardiff with a hamstring injury.
Confusion arose after reports claiming the 21-year-old pulled up in training on Wednesday were commented upon by Wales assistant manager Raymond Verheijen via his Twitter account.
Verheijen wrote: "This morning there will be an official statement by Gary Speed about the situation with Gareth Bale. The incompetent amateurs struck again!"
It was followed by another comment which read: "Funny to read about Gareth Bale injuring his hamstring in training yesterday ... as he did not train at all yesterday."
Verheijen’s 'incompetent amateurs' comment was seen as referring to Tottenham medical staff.
Manager Speed said: "In no way did it refer to Tottenham, that is a given.”
