Swansea City set to swoop on McGinn

Swansea City look set to ensure that Sunday’s FAI Cup final against Bohemians in Dublin is Niall McGinn’s last appearance for Derry City.

McGinn, who made his Northern Ireland debut against Hungary on Wednesday night, looks almost certain to leave the Brandywell during the January transfer window and the Welsh side have emerged as favourites for his signature.

And that could mean the 21-year-old’s Premier League dream will come true sooner than expected with the Swans currently one place — and one point — outside the Championship play-off places.

McGinn has admitted that he will probably have to leave Derry City in order to nail down a regular place in the Northern Ireland squad.

The former Dungannon Swifts winger does not want to become a one-cap wonder.

“I’d love to play across the water in England or Scotland and hopefully I’ll get my chance to do that either this year or next,” he said.

“I enjoyed the whole experience of being in the squad and the match on Wednesday night, but I know I have a lot of work to do.

“I really enjoyed working with the players in the squad and it was a massive step up for me, but I think I did okay.

“Sitting watching the match you could see it was being played at a really high tempo and it was a difficult game to come on into. I got a bit longer on the pitch than I was expecting.”

McGinn also acknowledges that he has come a long way since failing to make the Dungannon Swifts team which lost the Irish Cup final on penalties to Linfield last year.

If Chelsea can be the kings of Europe, so can England

One of the consequences of the late finish in Munich and the chaotic transport arrangements after the Champions League final was to force the ‘great and the good’ of the English football media to gather on a station platform near the Arena for a promised train to the city centre that, ultimately, never arrived.

What an epic battle the Champions League Final turned out to be. A clash between an organisation with a long and distinguished history, respected by friend and foe alike up against a relative newcomer, the plaything of a foreign oligarch, who is universally viewed with raised eyebrows.
