Tuffey still on high after Northern Ireland debut

By Stuart McKinley
Thursday, 20 November 2008

Johnny Tuffey refused to allow Northern Ireland’s defeat at the hands of Hungary to take the shine off ‘the greatest moment of his career.’

The Partick Thistle goalkeeper was handed his full international debut after previously being involved in four squads without making the bench.

Now the 21-year-old’s desire for more caps has been heightened, but he knows that patience is key with Maik Taylor in possession of the No. 1 shirt.

“Making my international debut at Windsor Park was a dream come true,” said Tuffey.

“Captaining the under-21s and playing for Partick against Rangers at Ibrox last season were special moments, but making my senior debut for my country is the greatest moment for me.

“Although the result was disappointing for everyone the fans were still terrific.

“I have been on a bit of a high since, it was a great experience and from a personal point of view it was a very satisfying night.

“Whether you have one cap or 51 there is always a hunger for more. I have to work hard to make sure there are plenty more for me in the future.”

If Chelsea can be the kings of Europe, so can England

One of the consequences of the late finish in Munich and the chaotic transport arrangements after the Champions League final was to force the ‘great and the good’ of the English football media to gather on a station platform near the Arena for a promised train to the city centre that, ultimately, never arrived.

What an epic battle the Champions League Final turned out to be. A clash between an organisation with a long and distinguished history, respected by friend and foe alike up against a relative newcomer, the plaything of a foreign oligarch, who is universally viewed with raised eyebrows.
