U17 Women: Northern Ireland 2 Finland 4

Published 12/10/2011

Northern Ireland Under-17 women’s side were beaten 4-2 by Finland at Seaview in their opening Group C Euro 2012 qualifying match.

The visitors came flying out of the traps and shellshocked Northern Ireland were caught cold.

Goals from Julia Sappi, Hanna Lonnqvist and Natalia Kuikka gave Finland a commanding 3-0 lead inside 21 minutes.

Taru Lindgren grabbed a fourth with a minute to go in the first half before Lauren Brennan got one back for Northern Ireland in first half stoppage time.

The hosts were a much improved outfit in the second half and deservedly got a second goal — Aoife Curran smashing home a penalty with seven minutes to go but Niall Curneen’s side never recovered from their slow start to the game.

Northern Ireland’s next game is on Thursday night at Mourneview Park against England, who comfortably beat Israel 4-1 in the group opener.
