Warm welcome for Northern Ireland squad

Nigel Worthington’s young guns were last night welcomed to big time football in Italy with an impressive police escort from Pisa Airport to their luxurious hotel on the outskirts of the famous city in beautiful Tuscany.

Afternoon traffic, due to police outriders, was brought to a standstill as the coach made its way to base camp for the next three days.

Only regular squad members Alan Mannus, Jonny Tuffey, David Healy, Damien Johnson and Grant McCann have experienced such magnificent treatment before.

Worthington now expects the players to get down to business on the training pitch

He said: “This is a great experience for all the young boys, just to be a part of a senior squad and I’m looking forward to seeing how they react in training. I’ve included some Irish League players in the squad for this match and I would expect one or two of them to start.

“Their panel of players is inexperienced too. They have one or two players with a lot of caps as well as players who don’t have any caps at all. I think it will be a very good and competitive game.”
