Wayne Rooney's younger brother, John, has signed for Orlando City following his release by the New York Red Bulls.

Former Macclesfield midfielder Rooney, 21, was on New York's books last season but did not secure a regular first-team place and moves on to join a team in the third tier of professional football in the United States, managed by former Everton favourite Adrian Heath.

The deal is pending approval from the United States Soccer Federation.

Heath said on Orlando's official website: "I've known John for a long time, from the early days in England. We're delighted to have him. He'll be a really good piece for us. He can play multiple positions in the midfield, which is a very good thing for us."
