What a roller-coaster
Sports Editor Steven Beacom reflects on the highs and lows of a remarkable series of games
Friday, 23 November 2007
Best moment: Final whistle against Denmark at Windsor Park. Northern
Ireland were hanging on at the end so when the referee blew up there was an
almighty outpouring of relief and joy around the country. Goals from Warren
Feeney and David Healy gave our boys a famous 2-1 win and the chance to go
into the final game of the campaign still in with a chance of qualification.
Best goal: Healy's sensational chip against the Danes. Not just
breathtaking but the most important for 21 years. It was a glorious goal and
a fitting way for the Windsor Park set of games to finish.
Worthy mentions: Take your pick from the rest of Healy's efforts. The
hat-trick goal in the 3-2 win against Spain was something else as was his
dynamic double in the 2-1 success over Sweden. Kyle Lafferty's brilliant hit
in the 1-1 draw in Sweden was also pretty special.
Best atmosphere: Would go with Northern Ireland 2-1 Sweden with this
one. "Are you watching Dennis Wise?"
Worthy
mentions: Spain and Denmark at home were awesome, while the Green and
White Army were in great voice in the games in Spain, Denmark, Sweden and
Liechtenstein.
Player of the campaign: David
Healy. World class. He scored 13 goals, breaking the European Championship
qualifying goalscoring record. A true genius and if anyone deserves to be
playing in the Euro 2008 finals it is the magic man from Killyleagh. Sadly
that won't be the case.
Worthy mentions: Stephen
Craigan was superb. Also Aaron Hughes was consistent, Steve Davis and Sammy
Clingan impressive in midfield and Maik Taylor excellent in goal.
Best individual performance: David Healy v Spain.
Worthy mentions: Healy in Liechtenstein and at home to Sweden, Warren
Feeney at home to Sweden, Kyle Lafferty away in Sweden, Stephen Craigan in
Denmark and debut boy Jonny Evans at home to Spain.
Best comeback: After being bizarrely dropped for games in Latvia and
Iceland, Stephen Craigan returned to the team and produced three outstanding
displays against the world class strikers of Sweden, Denmark and Spain. Also
it is good to see George McCartney back in the Northern Ireland fold. I
didn't agree with his decision not to play for Northern Ireland when Lawrie
Sanchez was in charge, but he is up for it now and that has to be welcomed.
Funniest moment: Over 14,000 fans turning to Dennis Wise in
the stands during the win over Sweden at Windsor singing "Are you
watching Dennis Wise?" At the time Healy was struggling to get in
Wise's Leeds team. To be fair to Dennis he took it well.
Best celebration: The scenes inside Windsor after the win over Denmark. A
joy to behold.
Most dramatic moment: Healy's
goal against Denmark.
Worthy mention: Lawrie
Sanchez telling the IFA he wanted to leave after the win over Spain, then
changing his mind and coming back. Also in there is Sanchez leaving for
Fulham and then deciding to stay there when he was offered the full-time
post at Craven Cottage.
Biggest disappointment:
The defeats in Latvia and Iceland are on a par. Iceland winning 3-0 at
Windsor was no picnic either. And of course there was that unnecessary
incident involving Keith Gillespie and George McCartney on the plane home
from Reykjavik. Best keep away from Iceland in the World Cup draw.
Things to look forward to: More Healy goals, a blossoming partnership
between Davis and Clingan, the continued consistency of Aaron Hughes and
Stephen Craigan and more great nights in the World Cup campaign.
Things to learn: We cannot afford to lose to teams like Latvia and
Iceland. Every home game must be played at night, preferably on a Wednesday,
the managerial situation needs to be sorted out quickly and no more own
goals please lads.
Thanks for the memories: James
Quinn, who retired during this campaign. A fine servant for Northern Ireland.
Abiding memories: You just never knew what was going to
happen next. It was an incredible campaign with managers (Lawrie Sanchez and
Nigel Worthington) coming and going, Healy's goals, the brilliant nights at
Windsor and the boys giving us so many memories to cherish. Quite simply we
will never forget the roller coaster ride that Northern Ireland took us on
over the last couple of years.
