Young guns can shock Germans: Beaglehole

By Graham Luney
Thursday, 4 September 2008

Northern Ireland Under-21 manager Steve Beaglehole says his boys are ready to stun mighty Germany in their own backyard tomorrow.

The promising prospects in green are preparing for a UEFA European Championships qualifier and although their destiny is no longer in their hands, the team will scrap to the end.

Our boys must beat Germany in Wuppertal and hope other results go their way.

Northern Ireland boast 12 points from seven games while Germany and Israel both have 13 points from six games.

Beaglehole said: “It’s a big challenge for us against a big football nation but we’re going there to try to win the game.

“We know qualification is out of our hands. But we want to do Northern Ireland proud by going out there and putting on a good performance and hopefully getting a good result.”

The squad features many players from the Northern Ireland team that won the Elite section of the Milk Cup in August.

Beaglehole added: “It was useful for me to see some of the players we have now included in the Under-21 squad.

“We want to create a winning mentality and we did that at the first get-together at the Milk Cup.

“Hopefully we can carry that attitude into the Germany game and on from there.”

Northern Ireland Under-21 squad for Germany game: Goalkeepers: Trevor Carson (Sunderland, on loan at Chesterfield), Chris McCluskey (Lisburn Distillery). Defenders: Liam McMenamin (Sheffield Wednesday), Jonathan Flynn (Blackburn Rovers), Christopher Casement (Ipswich Town), Craig Cathcart (Manchester United), Daniel Lafferty (Celtic). Midfielders: Adam Chapman (Sheffield United), Corry Evans (Manchester United), Philip Lowry (Institute), Eunan O’Kane (Everton), Sammy Stewart (Aberdeen). Forwards: Andrew Little (Rangers), James McLean (Derry City), Adam McGurk (Aston Villa), Mark McAllister (Dungannon Swifts).

If Chelsea can be the kings of Europe, so can England

One of the consequences of the late finish in Munich and the chaotic transport arrangements after the Champions League final was to force the ‘great and the good’ of the English football media to gather on a station platform near the Arena for a promised train to the city centre that, ultimately, never arrived.

Billy on the Box: DD’s big pair puts on blue show in Bavaria

What an epic battle the Champions League Final turned out to be. A clash between an organisation with a long and distinguished history, respected by friend and foe alike up against a relative newcomer, the plaything of a foreign oligarch, who is universally viewed with raised eyebrows.
