Young guns can shock Germans: Beaglehole
Thursday, 4 September 2008
Northern Ireland Under-21 manager Steve Beaglehole says his boys are ready to stun mighty Germany in their own backyard tomorrow.
The promising prospects in green are preparing for a UEFA European Championships qualifier and although their destiny is no longer in their hands, the team will scrap to the end.
Our boys must beat Germany in Wuppertal and hope other results go their way.
Northern Ireland boast 12 points from seven games while Germany and Israel both have 13 points from six games.
Beaglehole said: “It’s a big challenge for us against a big football nation but we’re going there to try to win the game.
“We know qualification is out of our hands. But we want to do Northern Ireland proud by going out there and putting on a good performance and hopefully getting a good result.”
The squad features many players from the Northern Ireland team that won the Elite section of the Milk Cup in August.
Beaglehole added: “It was useful for me to see some of the players we have now included in the Under-21 squad.
“We want to create a winning mentality and we did that at the first get-together at the Milk Cup.
“Hopefully we can carry that attitude into the Germany game and on from there.”
