Ballinamallard United 2 Dungannon Swifts 0: Mallards give Dykes birthday bonus
There was an early birthday present for Ballinamallard United boss Gavin Dykes as his side picked up three points with a 2-0 win over Dungannon Swifts at Ferney Par on Saturday.
Dykes, who turned 49 yesterday, saw his Fermanagh side take the lead through captain James McKenna after 24 minutes.
And they then wrapped up the victory with just over 10 minutes to go when Adam Lecky fired home from the penalty spot after Ryan Mayse was upended in the box.
"The boys found out it is my birthday tomorrow and they said they would give me a good birthday present and I'm happy with that," said Dykes on Saturday after the game.
McKenna was on the scoresheet for the second home game in a row when he slotted home from close range and Dykes had only praise for the midfielder.
"I had to talk him out of retirement last year," said the manager.
"He has been excellent for this club, he's been a great servant, and it means a lot to him to play for this club."
Swifts boss Rodney McAree, who had no complaints about the result, said: "They wanted it more than we did. We have to develop a winning mentality and a strong inside."
