Brian Hutton's Derry City are easily carved up by Cork
Cork City 3-0 Derry City
Derry City were comfortably beaten by title-chasing Cork City in a one-sided affair at Turner's Cross last night.
Goals from John O'Flynn and Karl Sheppard put Peter Hutton's team to the sword as the hosts extended their winning run to five games.
The Candy Stripes were second best throughout and they never looked like threatening the Cork defence, until Patrick McEleney curled an effort onto the crossbar on 90 minutes.
Cork signalled their intentions early in when Billy Dennehy's inswinging corner eluded every red and white shirt but Alan Bennett kept the play alive and his pass across the face of goal just needed a touch before Ryan McBride came to Derry's rescue when he hooked the ball behind for a corner.
The opening goal came after 16 minutes as a result of fantastic wing play by Ross Gaynor. The Cork man brilliantly nutmegged Shaun Kelly, giving him time and space to pick out John O'Flynn 10 yards from goal, with the striker having the simple task of firing past Gerard Doherty.
Cork continued to pour forward at the Derry defence and Liam Millar almost opened his Cork account with a spectacular effort from 25 yards which was brilliantly parried by Doherty, before O'Flynn fired the rebound into the side netting.
Derry were breached again a minute before the break as the Cork pressure eventually told. Dennehy's corner found brother Darren in the centre of the penalty area and his downward header looked to be heading in but Karl Sheppard fired in from close range to put Cork 2-0 ahead.
Cork began the second half determined to kill off their opponents and nearly had the third goal when Dennehy crossed and John Dunleavy reacted quickest to flick the ball past Gerard Doherty but also the post.
But the game was up on 70 minutes when Dennehy crossed for Sheppard to hook in his second goal of the night.
