Browne the hero as Derry suffer late agony again

Cork City 2-1 Derry City

By Eoin Wilson

Derry City suffered in injury time for the second time in a week as Kenny Browne headed in a late, late winner at Turner's Cross last night.

Just days after being denied a win against Finn Harps by Sean Houston's late header at the Brandywell, Derry were denied again, as late goals from Danny Morrissey and Browne denied the Candy Stripes their third win over the Leesiders this season.

City were actually on the verge of victory at Turner's Cross thanks to Niclas Vemmelund's first goal for the club early in the second half, but the green tide of pressure was incessant after that and the visitors just could not hold out.

After 35 minutes of almost constant Cork pressure, Derry City finally made inroads into their opponents' half, and they very nearly took the lead with a brilliantly worked corner routine. Keith Ward took the kick short to Barry McNamee, who worked himself into a shooting position on the edge of the area. The ball flew through a crowded area where Niclas Vemmelund attempted to deflect it goalwards, but Mark McNulty parried it away brilliantly to keep his team level. Derry stunned Turner's Cross on 55 minutes as Barry McNamee's corner was swept in by Vemmelund to give the visitors the lead.

The pressure on Derry grew in the closing stages of the game, with Cork becoming increasingly desperate as the minutes ticked by. Derry were not helping themselves however by the concession of needless free kicks and from one of these, Cork got their deserved equaliser. Greg Bolger's cross finding Danny Morrissey who stooped low to guide a header in from close range on 85 minutes.

Five minutes of added time gave Cork City a huge lift and they roared forward. The pressure was incessant and City, for all their effort, could not stem the tide, and Browne rose highest in a crowd of red and green to head in the winner.
