Burrows comes home fourth but beats Messi

By Stuart McKinley

FIFA have revealed that Glentoran striker Matty Burrows came fourth in the running for the best goal of 2010.

The 24-year-old was beaten to the Ballon d’Or Puskas Award by Turkey and Bayern Munich midfielder Hamit Altintop, who polled more than 25 per cent more than his closest rival.

Burrows, who went from being a run of the mill Irish League player to worldwide Internet phenomenon after his back-heeled volley against Portadown received more than a million hits on YouTube in the 48 hours after scoring the goal in early October, still finished above Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, who won the World Player of the Year title.

FIFA BALLON D’OR PUSKAS AWARD VOTING: Hamit Altintop (Turkey) 40.55%, Linus Hallenius (Sweden) 13.23%, Giovanni Van Bronkhorst (Netherlands) 10.61%, Matty Burrows (Northern Ireland) 7.87%, Neymar (Brazil) 6.89%, Lionel Messi (Argentina) 6.23%, Samir Nasri (France) 4.55%, Kumi Yokoyama (Japan) 4.34%, Siphiwe Tshabalala (South Africa) 3.52%, Arjen Robben (Netherlands) 2.17%.
