EA Sports Cup: Salthill Devon 2 Derry City 4

After extra time

By Peter Hutcheon

Derry City needed extra time to come through a tricky first round EA Sports Cup League Cup tie in Galway last night.

Ryan McBride scored from a Gareth McGlynn corner for Derry with eight minutes of extra time remaining at Salthill and then McGlynn added a fourth two minutes later.

Derry needed to come from behind twice in normal time to save the match.

McGlynn had only come on as a second half substitute when he played a decisive role in the tie with his 75th minute corner leading to an Emmet Friars' goal to make the game 2-2.

Salthill took a 37th minute lead against the run of play when Etanda Nikololo finished off Ronan Conlon's centre.

Jamed McClean came up with the first Derry equaliser in the 55th minute. But within four minutes the Galway men were back in front courtesy of Victor Collins.

Derry went all out for an equaliser and got it when Friars sent a bullet of a header past Bernard Power to set up the extra-time victory.
