Bates bags brace as Glenavon storm past Institute

By Gordon Hanna

Glenavon 4 Institute 1: Glenavon stormed back from the shock of falling behind after only 12 minutes to ease themselves into this evening's draw for the League Cup quarter-finals.

Having made six changes from the team which started against Linfield on Saturday, Gary Hamilton's men needed time to take control.

In came Eddie McCallion, Kyle Neill, Kris Lindsay and Conor Hagan as well as Hamilton himself, but the Premiership side were rocked back when Darren McCauley put the Championship side in front.

Two goals in the space of three minutes saw them turn round with their noses in front.

Player-boss Gary Hamilton eased the growing frustration with a spectacular strike from 25 yards in the 40th minute.

Credit to Andy McGrory for refusing to give up what looked a lost cause. He followed up a miss-hit pass from Andy Kilmartin.

The winger charged down goalkeeper Michael Doherty's hurried clearance and from the throw-in Hamilton gained possession and produced a gem of a finish.

Three minutes later the Lurgan side were in front. This time it was man-of-the-match Guy Bates who did the damage after a blistering volley from McGrory came back off Doherty's crossbar.

Rough justice perhaps on Paul Kee's men who had always looked dangerous going forward.

Bates missed a chance of a second when he failed to hit the target after Hamilton found him with a glorious cross field pass.

Hamilton teed up another chance for his partner, but Bates fired straight at the keeper.

Bates made no mistake in the 65th minute when he put the game out of Institute's reach with a sublime chip from 18 yards which left Doherty well beaten.

Kyle Neill completed the scoring three minutes from time with Bates the supplier chesting down a cross from James Singleton.

Bates missed the chance of a hat-trick when he failed to make proper contact when left with a free header.
