Glenavon in pole position to sign up Paddy McCourt
Glenavon are set to sign former Celtic and Northern Ireland star Paddy McCourt. The Mourneview Park outfit have moved into pole position to snap up the 32-year-old after Derry City manager Kenny Shiels revealed that he would not be bringing McCourt back to the Brandywell.
Irish League clubs Linfield and Cliftonville have been linked with McCourt but the Belfast Telegraph understands that Glenavon are now at the head of the queue to land the gifted playmaker, who is currently a free agent.
It would represent quite a coup for the Lurgan men, who won the Irish Cup last season and have ambitions of making a title challenge in the coming campaign.
McCourt, a big hero at Derry and Celtic before playing for Barnsley, Brighton, Notts County on loan and Luton, made 18 appearances for Northern Ireland.
McCourt's wife Laura was diagnosed with a brain tumour earlier this year. She had a successful operation on the tumour last month.
Having returned to live in Northern Ireland, McCourt was hoping to re-join his hometown club but Derry boss Shiels turned down the opportunity, insisting that while he rates the player he wants to give chances to the gifted youngsters at the club.
