Carnbane League round-up October 19

Kehoe Cars Bessbrook Cup holders Windmill Stars will meet Bessbrook United (the soccer giants of the Model village) in one of the competition’s semi-finals, while Orchard City and Millburn United will clash in the other.

The ties were drawn by the Carnbane League chairman Niall Quinn at last week’s press launch of the semi-final stage of the competition held in Gerald McGuigan’s premises in Monaghan Street.

Brian Naughton of the Carnbane League, in organising the event, said that this year’s 45th final of the cup will take place at the Newry City AFC Showgrounds on Boxing Day (weather permitting).

He said that last year’s final featuring Windmill Stars and Orchard City was a classic, and that the staging of it at the Showgrounds on Boxing Day had renewed great enthusiasm, not only among the teams, but among soccer fans all over the area.

Of this season’s semi-finalists, he said that all four teams  have vast followers and no matter which contest the final, another large attendance is anticipated.

Representatives of all four semi-finalists expressed their delight at being very much involved in the destination of the prestigious trophy, which has already been won seven times by Windmill Stars, and once by Millburn United, while Orchard City who are celebrating their second season in the league, were last season’s beaten finalists.

The date for the semi-finals is Saturday, November 2, both to be played at the Derrylecka Playing Fields.
