Frustration for Eddie Patterson as Glentoran are held again

Glentoran 1 Coleraine 1: Eddie Patterson admitted that his injured-ravaged Glentoran team had been below par as they recorded a seventh home draw of the season.

Coleraine left the Oval with a point after Aaron Boyd's 56th minute strike had cancelled out Ruairi Harkin's 12th minute opener.

Harkin finished sweetly from outside the box, with Boyd pouncing on a rebound after a Curtis Allen shot had come back off the base of the post.

The Bannsiders had strong claims for a penalty in the first half when the score was still 0-0, after Jason Hill appeared to handle Harkin's free-kick, and they had looked the team most likely to win the game.

Eoin Bradley almost grabbed the points when he latched onto a long ball but was denied by a full stretch save from Elliott Morris in the Glentoran goal.

The Glens have now won only one home game since early October and Patterson was left wondering what might have been if his team had sparked from the start of play.

"It took us to go a goal down to get the kick up the backside that we needed," said the Glentoran manager.

"We started poorly and, to be fair, Coleraine took the game to us.

"We didn't create as many chances as we would have liked. We were bland in our approach.

"The big danger to us in the second half, during which we improved greatly and played some fantastic football, came from long kicks from their goalkeeper.

"We were caught out three or four times, but credit to the lads for showing a lot of character."

Coleraine manager Oran Kearney was angered at referee raymond Hetherington's failure to award the penalty against Hill and also his non-action when the same player tangled with David McDaid late on.

"The incident was just outside the box, but how we didn't get a free-kick and then a red card is beyond me," said Kearney.

"All we saw was a yellow card for a player remonstrating with the referee."
