If it's former Killie boss Shiels, expect fireworks

By Scott Young

I will always have a special place in my heart for Glentoran. I played for them, managed them, made great friends when I was there and want to see them do well.

There's no doubt though that the financial problems at the club in recent years have made success tougher to achieve.

After sacking Eddie Patterson, they are looking for a new manager, but no matter who takes charge I would urge Glentoran fans to be patient because it will take several years for them to challenge Linfield, Cliftonville and Crusaders for title glory, unless someone is willing to hand the club lots of money.

Kenny Shiels is the latest name to be linked to the vacant job.

I know Glentoran are looking to bring more youth team players through and Shiels has a proven record in that department. He is also well known for being his own man.

He would want to do things his way with no interference - not always possible in Irish League football. Another point to note is that he says what he likes and if other managers or players get upset, so be it.

Halloween may be over, but if Kenny does get the Glentoran job, we could be in for some fireworks!
