IFA to host a five-star display of football

By Martin Mahwinney

The Billy Neill Complex in Dundonald is set to host the biggest disability football competition in Europe over the next two days.

A total of 55 teams from across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland will compete in the Coca-Cola Community Cup today and tomorrow.

The 5-a-side tournament will split into four ability levels after today's games, and Llandludno will, once again, be the team to watch. The Welsh side have won the ability 1 event for the last four years, and will be eager to defend their title once again.

This year’s tournament sees the biggest ever field to compete.

When it first kicked off in 2003, only five teams took part, growing to a total of 41 sides in last years competition.

Highlighting the importance of the event, IFA Disability Football Development Manager, Alan Crooks said: “The Community Cup gives players from across Northern Ireland the opportunity to test their skills against similar teams from the Republic of Ireland and the UK.

“The four ability divisions result in a level playing field as every game is competitive and everyone has the opportunity to impress.

“I'm really looking forward to the event, and I'm sure it will be one to remember”.

It all gets underway at 11am this morning, and will continue till 3pm, with the final stages set to take place between the same times tomorrow.

A presentation will follow at around 3.30 pm tomorrow.
