Kiely bags brace as Derry City’s lead is slashed

Waterford 2 Derry City 0: Derry City’s lead at the top of the Airtricity First Division was cut to just four points after defeat at fellow title contenders Waterford United.

A brace from Willie Joe Kiely ensured Stephen Henderson’s side deservedly picked up maximum points to claim their second success over the Candystripes this season.

The home side had a super chance to take the lead in the first minute, but Kiely’s attempted chip hit the side netting after Gerard Doherty was caught in no man’s land.

Ten minutes before the break the visitors’ first shot on target via Patrick McEleney’s long-range free-kick went straight at Kevin Burns and the United keeper easily gathered.

Waterford took the lead on 42 minutes when Timmy Purcell’s low centre found Kiely, who calmly steered his ninth league goal of the season past Gerard Doherty.

Stephen Kenny (pictured) decided to change things on the hour when he brought on Stephen Parkhouse for Darren McCauley and changed his formation to a 4-4-2.

But United doubled their lead after a goalkeeping error from Doherty, whose attempted clearance down field only found Paul Carey and the midfielder’s first time pass picked out Kiely, who blasted past the hapless Derry keeper.

Derry had a super chance to get back into the game virtually straight away when Parkhouse’s back-flick released James McClean, but his well hit drive was superbly kept out by Burns.
