McGinn planning to conjure magic at Brentford

By Jonathan Bradley

There will be plenty of local interest when England’s third tier kicks off kicks off this weekend.

Niall McGinn will be hoping to force his way into the thoughts of Celtic manager Neil Lennon as he spends the year on loan at Brentford. The west London club are managed by former-Manchester City striker Uwe Rosler.

Former-Northern Ireland international Danny Wilson will be relishing the chance to take over at Sheffield United and fans will expect nothing less than promotion straight back to the Championship.

At Oldham Athletic, Carl Winchester will be looking to build on his end of season form that saw him score his first league goal for the Latics and earn a Northern Ireland call-up for the Carling Nations Cup games in May.

Winchester will be joined in Paul Dickov’s squad by Northern Ireland youth internationals Ryan Burns, Kirk Millar, Phillip McGrath and Matthew Lund, although compatriot Warren Feeney has left the club and is expected to sign for Plymouth.

Damien Johnson, capped 56 times by his country, will spend his second consecutive season on loan at Huddersfield after having his involvement in the first team limited last year through injury.

When Barnet’s Npower League 2 fixtures were released this summer, their manager and former Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez will have had a special interest in the date of one particular match-up.

After AFC Wimbledon’s promotion from the Conference last season, former Crazy Gang member Sanchez will be looking forward to meeting the successors to the Wimbledon name.

The pair will meet on November 5 at Kingsmeadow.

Elsewhere, Michael Smith will be out to impress after his move from Ballymena United to promotion hopefuls Bristol Rovers.
