Newry City and Institute fight out drab draw

Newry City and Institute played out a dour goalless draw at The Showgrounds last night that epitomised just why both sides are in lowly league positions.
Newry had by far the better of the first-half chances with Alan Davidson going close three times for the home side as they tried to break the deadlock in a very flat opening 45 minutes.
Davidson forced Institute keeper Gavin Cullen into a save after just four minutes with a stinging left foot effort from 25 yards before Shaun Holmes side footed over after David McClements’ cutback on 13 for the visitors.
Four minutes later Davidson’s dipping shot, again from distance, forced Cullen to tip the ball out for a corner.
The best chance of the half came to Stephen Garrett on 24 minutes, but he just couldn’t get enough on Ross Black’s driven cross from the left and directed his header. Black himself then had Cullen scrambling to push away his hooked volley on 34 minutes before Davidson wasted a gilt-edged chance six minutes before the break when he placed a weak shot straight into the goalkeeper’s arms with nobody near him.
The North West men came out brightly for the second period and Declan Divin should have done better 10 seconds after the restart, but shot straight at Andy Coleman before the same player poked the ball just wide on 49 minutes.
A cleverly worked corner saw Coleman called into action once again when Sean Friars found Holmes and his well struck volley was beaten out by the Newry goalkeeper.
