Pomeroy shows nerves of steel to fire Institute to Cup triumph

Institute 1 Coleraine 1

By Colin Speer

Institute claimed the North West Senior Cup, defeating neighbours Coleraine in a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw. Young striker Alex Pomeroy was the Drumahoe men's hero, as he fired home their winning spot-kick after Sammy Morrow and Mark Edgar had missed for the Bannsiders.

Institute started well and deservedly took the lead on six minutes as Sean McCarron found fellow striker Pomeroy, who turned the ball home.

Just after the mid-way point of the half, McCarron had a glorious chance to double Stute's lead but blasted wide from close range.

That miss came back to haunt the home side as Coleraine levelled after some poor defending.

Ruaidhri Higgins' free-kick was headed into the air by Stute defender Darryl McDermott and an unmarked Morrow nodded home.

On 40 minutes Michael Doherty had to pull off a super save to keep out Ryan Doherty.

Coleraine should have taken the lead at the start of the second half, but ex-Derry City striker Jordan Allan saw his lob sail just over.

Stute had a great chance to move back in front on 65 minutes but Dean Curry headed over.

In what was a disappointing second half it was Stute who nearly won it on 88 minutes after Doherty latched onto substitute Gareth Brown's through ball, but just as he was about to pull the trigger, Bannsiders left-back Edgar made a wonderful last-ditch tackle to deny him.

In the closing minutes Morrow nearly grabbed his second but his strike was superbly kept out.

The game then went to penalties, with Stute triumphant.
