Portadown to appeal their 12-point penalty over McMahon payment

By Staff Reporter

Portadown are to appeal the 12-point deduction handed out by the Irish FA Disciplinary Committee after taking legal advice.

The club were hit with the penalty, which will take effect from the start of the 2016-17 season, after being deemed guilty of paying Peter McMahon while registered as an amateur. It is understood that the club claims there was a mix-up over forms and they didn't intend to break any rules.

A club statement read: "Portadown directors have confirmed they plan to appeal the severity of the 12-point deduction imposed on the club this week by the Irish Football Association.

"The board of directors and club's legal team met on Wednesday to discuss options, with a resolve within Shamrock Park to lodge an appeal that is hoped would result in the reduction of the penalty."
