Setanta Sports Cup: Shamrock Rovers too hot for Lisburn Distillery

By David Hunter

Shamrock Rovers 4 Lisburn Distillery 2 (Rovers won 7-2 on aggregate): Lisburn Distillery bowed out of the Setanta Cup despite a creditable performance against Airtricity 2010 League champions Shamrock Rovers.

Gary Liggett netted twice at the impressive Tallaght Stadium, the first time the Whites had scored in five games, but Rovers were just too good and rattled in four to make it 7-2 on aggregate.

The Whites took the lead on 14 minutes, Liggett capitalising on a blunder by Pat Flynn, raced to the edge of the box and cracked a low shot into the corner.

Rovers stormed back and Ciaran Kilduff equalised, taking an angled pass wide of Billy Brennan to slot home on 42 minutes.

Two minutes after the break Rovers went ahead — Karl Sheppard slipped the ball through to Stephen Rice who struck home from 18 yards out.

The Whites restored parity on the night when Gary Browne crossed for Liggett to head home.

Nine minutes from time a poor clearance saw the ball played to Paddy Kavanagh, he darted into the box to fire home from 15 yards out and on 89 minutes, Kavanagh scored Rovers' fourth.
